Oh yeah, I am a vegan and it’s because I think animals, as sentient beings, should be taken into consideration. They have needs and desires, and we are in a position to take those needs seriously. Therefore I think we should.
It’s not simply that we should treat them well, but I also think there is a combined instrumental and intrinsic value to life. This means that life is most valuable if it can be lived happily (instrumental value), but also that it cannot simply be used in calculations of adding or subtracting general happiness (intrinsic value).
Therefore I abstain as much as possible from animal products, so they won’t have to be kept or slaughtered for me. Slaughter, even if done kindly, remains involuntary (from the animals’ perspective), instrumental, and therefore a violation of an animal’s integrity.
